How Well We Communicate Defines Who We Are

Knowing who we are is important, but let others know “who we are” is more important. Because in our personal relationship, “who we are” is defined not by ourselves but by the people around us. This is why communication is critical. But merely known by others is far from enough. Around us, there are always some people who are overwhelmingly welcomed, who are comfortable to be with, or who are charming and infectious. Not just they can freely and properly communicate with others, more importantly, they could communicate fluently, enthusiastically and contagiously. They are effective and professional communicators. That’s who I have always wanted to be.
Through the classes I have attended, it’s easy to find out that the topics we are discussing in this class are nothing new. So from my perspective, I think what we are doing is exploring what we have already known in the subconscious area of our brain. After that, a bridge that connect the subconsciousness and the consciousness is established so that we are able to reflect on how well we communicate as well as to enhance the communication. Let me take nonverbal communication for example, when we are talking, we are able to detect the speaker’s emotion or whether he or she is lying judging from their posture, voice tone, eye contact or their facial expression when we don’t realize it. So in this class, we are going to know more on communication process and develop practical and effective communication skills which will distinguish us and build a stepping stone to a successful career.
For me now, it’s not easy for me to express myself fluently with Englishlet alone communicating effectively and professionally. But I cherish the belief that professional communication is a life-long pursue. There is no limit to it and we can always do better. So as long as I am making progress, I am happy!

  2. Hey hongwei!! I agree with the point about how the topics we are discussing in class are nothing new. Well, not all, but some of it. Communication, like you mentioned has both verbal and non verbal aspects to it. Mastering both aspects is essential if one wants to be the charismatic and comfortable friend everyone wants to be with. Don't worry about the toughness you feel in expressing fluently in English. You have an awesome class who will help you improve it bit by bit. Have fun in Singapore. (:

  3. Hey Song Wei!
You have some interesting observations. Your first point on how good communication is useful for letting other people know who we are is indeed useful for any form of relationships across the board. Especially today when most of our communication is done online through facebook and twitter updates, how you express yourself in words and your pictures uploaded can tell a whole story of an individual, even when another person hardly talks to him. Through this, you tell people what type of person you are, your interests and opinions. If you do this correctly, you will expose yourself to like-minded people and especially for you who is new in Singapore, you will probably have people who you want to meet come knocking at your door instead of the other way round.
I also totally agree with Jin Yuan’s tip to you, don’t worry about your English! You will be speaking English every day for the next few months. It’ll naturally improve.  A good start will be to change your blog and internet explorer to english? haha I am having trouble sending this post!

  4. Hey HongWei!

I agree with the fact that you said that practising good communication is just making doing consciously what is in our subconscious. Although, reading your blog post made me think that people can use communication in order to portray a different them, not use it to portray who they are. Thus good communication can be used both ways. Perhaps this is seen in acting, where actors use communication skills to portray the character they are playing.
